CLAT 2009 Law Entrance Postponed, New Dates Soon
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the admission Test to India's 11 premier national law universities , scheduled for Sunday has been postponed after two locked and sealed steel trunks containing test material were found tampered with while in transit from Hyderabad to Lucknow , reports the Times of India. New dates for the undergraduate and postgraduate programme entrance exams will be announced soon.
"Two locked and sealed steel boxes containing the CLAT-2009 test material were found with broken latches and locks while in transit from Hyderabad to Lucknow through Blue Dart Courier services,'' said Veer Singh, convener of CLAT-2009 and vice-chancellor of Nalsar University of Law in Hyderabad, the institute in charge of conducting this year's entrance exam.
It is not clear where the trunks were tampered with. V Narayana Swamy, registrar of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies said that when the trunks reached Lucknow, they were reportedly received in a damaged condition. This is the second year that the national law universities are conducting a joint entrance exam. The institutes merely courier the test paper, unlike the process followed by the IIMs or the IITs, where a faculty member travels with the exam paper boxes.
"However, now, we will have to rethink the transportation process. The courier agency transports our trunks via road in their special vehicles,'' added another registrar. By Wednesday, the vice-chancellors were contemplating holding the test on a Sunday two weeks from May 17. "We prepare two sets of question papers. But a question now arises on the mode in which they should be transported to all exam centres,'' pointed out another faculty member. Around 15,000 students from across the country were supposed to take Sunday's exam.
However, following the development, an urgent meeting of all the 11 vice-chancellors has been convened on Thursday. Singh added that after examining the trunks, the registrar of Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow, in his report stated: "It seems to be a case of deliberate tampering with the boxes.'

According to this MoU, the Common Law Admission Test would be conducted hereafter every year by each of National Law Schools on rotation as per the criterion of seniority. The NLSIU, Bangalore, the oldest of the National Law Schools will set the process in motion by undertaking to conduct the admission test for the academic year 2008-09.
It is expected that other National Law Schools (i.e., the Law Schools established by State enactments) would join these seven Law Schools in due course.
It has been our experience that larger the catchment area, better will be the quality of students; and it would be better for the institutions and the society. This should be the first step to improve the quality of our educational institutions, so that they may measure upto the international standards. This is imperative, if we have to successfully meet the challenges of globalization.

The greatest contribution of National Law Schools has been to transform legal education into a professional education in its real sense of the term and to make it attractive to Indian intelligentsia. The success of National Law School of India University, Bangalore, has inspired many States to set up similar institutions in their respective territories and at present, there are eleven Law Schools in different parts of the country. These institutions are national in the sense that substantial number of seats in all these institutions are filled up by students from all over India and the academic staff are also recruited on all India basis. All of them conduct admission tests in different centres spread all over the country and thousands of students after their ten plus two examinations take these admission tests.
As the things stand now, each Law School conducts its own admission test and admits students as per its regulations. As a result, students aspiring for good legal education have to write a number of admission tests; and this multiplicity of admission tests has been causing tremendous hardship both physically and financially to the candidates taking these tests. This issue was raised from time to time by several people, but it drew national attention as a result of a Writ Petition filed by Mr. Varun Bhagat against the Union of India and various National Law Schools in the Supreme Court of India in 2006. In the course of hearing, the Honourable Chief Justice of India directed the Union of India to consult the National Law Schools with a view to evolving a scheme for common admission test. It may be noted that the Bar Council of India strongly supported this move towards common admission test.
Since all National Law Schools owe their existence to their respective State Legislation, there is no central agency to coordinate their activities. Therefore, a move such as common admission test requires the consensus of all National Law Schools participating in such a process. To facilitate such a consensus, the Ministry of Human Resources Development, the Government of India and the University Grants Commission of India convened the meeting of the Vice-Chancellors of seven National Law Schools namely NLSIU, NALSAR, NLIU, NUJS, NLU, HNLU and GNLU. The Chairman, Bar Council of India actively participated at these meetings. It may be noted that these seven Law Schools have been functioning for quite some time unlike other newly-established National Law Schools. After a couple of such meetings, these seven National Law Schools signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 23rd November, 2007 committing themselves to hold the common admission test. It is quite in order to acknowledge the significant role played by Mr. Sunil Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resources Development and Prof. Mool Chand Sharma, Vice-Chairman, University Grants Commission in this entire exercise.

Tamilnadu Law College Admission through CET - Madras High Court
Admission of students to the law colleges in Tamil Nadu is to be regulated by holding a competitive common entrance Test (CET), the Madras High Court said on Monday.
Framing a set of measures to restore the glory of the institution and to improve the legal education , the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla observed that the measures should be strictly implemented in the interest of the students, their parents and the public at large.
The Bench said that admission of students was to be reorganised and if necessary one more law college within the city might be opened. The heritage building of the law college should be renovated and restored to its original stature.
The Bench further said the sanctioned strength of the teaching faculty should be increased. The salary of part-time lectures to be increased from Rs 5,500 to not less than Rs 10,000 per month. The remuneration of guest lecturer/advocate to be increased from Rs 100 per hour with a maximum of Rs 4,000 per month to not less that Rs 500 per hour to a maximum of Rs10000 per month.Symbiosis Law School (SLS) SET 2009

Infrastructure and Facilities
Library: Symbiosis Law School has a well equipped library armed with the collection of the latest books in all realms of law, social sciences and management. It also boasts of a wide collection of journals, periodicals, magazines and reports including the U.S Supreme Court Reports and many more are being added periodically. The annual sanctioned budget of the library is approximately 10 million rupees.
Technological Facilities: Two computer laboratories house 70 computers with an internet facilities and access to online databases like Manupatra, Lexis-Nexis and West-Law, Hein Online and off-line databases like, Supreme Court Cases-Full Text, AIR Supreme Court Cases etc. The Symbiosis Law School is a Wi-Fi campus.
