Highway Engineers Plan, design, survey and construct all types of roads, bridges, and other structures, which connect cities and towns in the country. This requires detailed drawings with complete designs for drainage systems, pavement foundations, etc. The highway engineer also supervises work at the construction site, the quality of roads made, and, finally, ensures their proper maintenance.
Necessary Qualifications
One must be a civil engineer (BE), with a specialization in highway and traffic engineering for two years at the postgraduate level.
Job Opportunities
Private construction companies handling large projects such as housing complexes and townships employ highway engineers. There are also jobs in government departments, in the defense services, at ports and harbors, and with the border road organizations
